Why do I ask for applications?

Many reasons, but these are the top 3:  

1) Because it takes a bit of time on your part. And if you don’t have the motivation to do that, what’s the likelihood you’ll do the work or even answer the phone when I call you? That way people who aren’t dedicated weed themselves out.  

2) I want to make sure you pass the “stuck on a deserted island" test, meaning if you can carry on a conversation and are generally a fun person to be around, you will be a positive part of the group and I'll enjoy getting to know you (I'm basically a member of the family for awhile)  

3) I actually genuinely want to make sure you want to do this. I have an insanely high success percentage, and like to keep it that way, and a big part of that is honestly weeding people out who are not ready.
